New Book: Abstract Polaroids

Doubleplusgood Books is pleased to announce the release of a brand new book from photographer Stuart Woodman entitled Abstract Polaroids. It is a 12 page, full colour mini-book, produced in a hand numbered limited edition of 100 and is available to buy over at the Doubleplusgood Bookshop for £4.50 + P&P.

Abstract Polaroids is the fourth title to be published by Doubleplusgood Books and the second by artist Stuart Woodman. Following on from his acclaimed debut Now We Are 30, Woodman's latest book presents us with a collection of abstract images that explore the fundamental elements of photographic reproduction: light, chemistry and technology.

With echoes of Rothko's paintings and Wolfgang Tillmans experiments in abstract photography this book is small, but perfectly formed. Printed lithographically and with a machine varnish to enhance the look and feel of the images, this little gem has been lovingly designed by the talented chaps at A-Side in Cornwall.

If you attended PiY in Paris last weekend you will have had a sneak preview of the book as part of Laurence Vecten's curated selection of this years best self-published photobooks. Sadly I wasn't able to be there in person, but photos of the event now in its second year look like it was once again a rip-roaring success!

4th Kassel International Photobook Festival

Also on at the moment is the Kassel Photo Book Festival. I'm sad I can't be there, but happy to report that Now We Are 30 is one of the selection of books by the eminent photoblogger, bibliophile, publisher and all round lovely lady Laurence Vecten.

The Book Affair

Forgot to blog this one, but today and tomorrow is The Book Affair in Venice, where Doubleplusgood Books will be represented by OMMU Distribution who will be participating in the fair which gathers together some of today's most interesting independent publishing projects.

Art-Athina and New York Photo Festival

Yet more exciting book events! May is proving to be a fruitful month for the photobook...

First up is Art-Athina, the International Contemporary Art Fair of Athens - now in its 17th year. OMMU Distribution will be featuring all Doubleplusgood Books titles at the fair amongst a selection of monographs, exhibition catalogues, periodical editions, self-published items, artist books & zines. The fair opens today and runs until Sunday.

Also opening today and running til Sunday is the New York Photo Festival where the Indie Photobook Library will be showing their entire collection (which includes all the books we've published so far) at the Tobacco Warehouse in DUMBO, NYC.

If you're in either Athens or NYC both look like they'd be well worth a visit.

PPAC Second Annual Bookfair

All 3 Doubleplusgood Books titles are part of the selection of photobooks curated by the Indie Photobook Library which will be on display this Saturday at the PPAC Second Annual Bookfair. The fair is being held at the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center between 12 and 6pm Saturday 2nd April and looks like it should be a great event.

De Zines in Zaragoza

Forgot to mention earlier, but Doubleplusgood Books are featured once again in the De Zines exhibition of contemporary art publishing which is currently being held in Zaragoza in Spain until the 13th March, after which it will travel on to Aranjuez near Madrid - the opening night for which will be 22nd March. Le Bal, this weekend

my book Now We Are 30 is being featured this weekend in an event at Le Bal in Paris as part of a selection of photobooks curated by PIY and Le Garage. If you are in the city it should be well worth a look - Le Bal is such a great gallery and the bookshop and cafe are pretty awesome too.

Less than a month to go until the PiY exhibition at Maison d'art Bernard Anthonioz in Nogent sur Marne, just outside Paris. It is "une exposition de livres photos auto-publiés" and features an illustrious list of photographers who have all dabbled in self-publishing photobooks. I am proud to be listed amongst these photographers, many of whom are photo heros of mine.

This month sees the opening of "de zines" an exhibition at La Casa Encendida in Madrid organised by Roberto Vidal and Oscar Martin, which aims to reflect what is happening in contemporary publishing concerning independent publications; how this field relates to the field of artistic production and the contemporary social, cultural and political environment.

Now We Are 30 is featured as one of 400 international publications that have been gathered together for this project, which runs from 29th June - 29th August.

I'm stuck in London with the snow coming down outside waiting to see if the trains will run to Paris tomorrow and just had an email from Alec Soth about his new blog Little Brown Mushroom, which is well worth checking out. Doubleplusgood Books features on their comprehensive list of photo book & zine links. 'Now We Are 30' also appears on the Artist Book Database run by David Schoerner from Hassla Books. Both great resources for anyone interested in photobooks.

We’ve all had them: good days, bad days, in-between days, days where the light shines brightly through the curtain and all you can think is, “I don’t want to get up”. Days where the girl leaves. Days where she comes back. Days where the sun clatters off the pavement, where the leaves fall, where everything is perfect – days you want, even if you don’t know why, or how, to hold onto forever.

Now We Are 30 is a selection of the best (and worst) of those days. A series of Polaroid images charting one year in the life of Stuart Woodman: a year of change; of breakup; of new beginnings and strange places. But also, like any other year, of the mundane and minute. Using the un-editable immediacy of a Polaroid, Woodman tracks the big and little things of his life, adhering to a strict policy of “one day, one image”: days of moving cities, of failing relationships, of new beginnings.
